James “Jim” Sharp, PLS, CFedS, will be inducted into the Alaska Surveying and Mapping Hall of Fame at an awards banquet on February 15 during the 52nd annual Alaska Surveying and Mapping Conference (ASMC). The banquet will be at the Hilton Anchorage Hotel at 5:30 pm and is open to the public. Tickets are available at www.aksmc.org.
For more than 45 years, Sharp has been performing surveys throughout Alaska. His career has included cadastral surveys in remote locations for the BLM, surveys on the North Slope and along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline corridor, and leading the right-of-way engineering group for the Central Region of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. He currently is a senior land surveyor in the private sector for HDL Engineering Consultants, LLC. Sharp’s expertise in titles and public easements has been instrumental in many land cases over the years.
Sharp was nominated for this honor by his peers, and selected by a committee of geospatial professionals from a field of worthy nominees. Many land surveyors have had the privilege of working under his leadership. Outside of work, he has given back to the survey community through knowledge sharing as an adjunct professor for the University of Alaska Anchorage Geomatics Program, serving on the UAA Geomatics Advisory Board, and serving 10 years as Membership Chair for the Alaska Society of Professional Land Surveyors.
